Feature juvenile races in Queensland are on the radar for promising colt Toydini after an impressive victory at Randwick on Wednesday.
Toydini ($3.20 fav) dropped back in class in the Anzac Day Handicap (1400m) and had the addition of blinkers as he drew away over the final 200m to win by three lengths from Hora Sexta ($18) with a half-head to Nikody ($11) in third place.
Trainer Guy Walter said the colt would be nominated for the Group One TJ Smith Stakes and Group Two Sires’ Produce Stakes during the Brisbane winter carnival.
“That is an option because he’s a colt and you’ve got to look at better races with him,” Walter said.
“He needed to win today and I thought he won well and was pretty impressive.
“It’s a long way from this race to the Sires’ Produce and TJ Smith but he will be nominated.”
Toydini is a son of Bernardini and is out of quality racemare Johan’s Toy who was trained by Walter throughout her career.
Toydini started his career with an encouraging second at Hawkesbury last month before being stepped up into Group Three company at his second start when eighth in the Baillieu Handicap (1400m) on Golden Slipper day.
Dropping back to a no-metropolitan win race for two-year-olds, Toydini settled just behind the leaders before travelling up to hit the front with 300m to run.
He extended his lead over the final 200m.
“He won today like you would be hoping he would win,” Walter said.
Jockey Blake Shinn said he would leave a decision on a Brisbane preparation up to Walter but said the colt definitely had the ability to head that way.
“He’s a horse with a touch of quality about him and he certainly knows he’s a colt,” Shinn said.
“The blinkers made a difference today and he won like a horse that has got a lot of potential and he’s always shown that.”
